A message from the president and volunteer director of the Wild For Life Foundation

Defending their Freedom and Saving their Lives

"With human encroachment on natural habitats a constant feature of our modern world, America's wild and historic Mustangs are quickly loosing their Native home lands. As the remaining number of Wild Horses in the U.S. nears extinction, education and appreciation through the protection of Mustangs and Burros in the wild and in natural preserves and sanctuary environments becomes tantamount to their survival as a species. America’s Wild Horses cannot be reproduced once they are gone."

Can we preserve and protect one of America’s most iconic species before they become extinct in the wild and reverse the degradation to open rangelands caused by their removal? Can we reduce the 1% of the 9 million domestic horses deemed as surplus by curbing breeding practices? Can we reverse the negative impact that slaughtering horses takes against the US Gross Domestic Product in which live horses otherwise contribute over $112.1 BILLION to a year, by implementing responsible management practices & reabsorbing the tiny fraction of any surplus population back into the equine communities? Can we find harmony with animals and nature amongst the competing interests of agriculture, industry, energy, public land acquisition, recreation and urban sprawl?

We at Wild For Life Foundation say yes! Yes we can. But in order to acheive these golas we must first increase safeguards to protect the animals, this mission and the organizations that actively uphold it, This will require the work of far more than just one organization. It requires the kind of collaboration that underscores our Mission and the Saving America’s Horses Initiative, and the kind of dedication that has
helped to repeatedly defund the slaughter of horses for human consumption in the U.S. year after year.

The need to Save, Protect and Preserve America's Horses:

At the turn of the century there were millions of wild horses on the open range, but independent studies of the Bureau of Land Management’s data reveals that the BLM has not done a census since 1971 and the population numbers reported by the BLM are based on conflated theoretical estimates. In fact, according to the BLM’s own 2020-2021 estimate, the actual number of wild horses and burros on the open range has drastically DECLINED BY MORE THAN 96% since their last actual census. There are over 200 million acres of rangelands in the U.S. where these horses could roam freely, but America's horses and burros are quickly being eliminated by the same governmental agencies that claim to protect them. Unless action is taken, America’s wild equids will continue to vanish – a potentially catastrophic scenario for generations to come.

Wild horses that once roamed America's open rangelands are being eliminated by the Bureau of Land Management, despite existing federal laws that were passed with overwhelming support by the public. It costs the American tax payers at least $5,000,000 (MILLION) in taxpayer dollars every year to subsidize foreign-owned horse slaughter plants. Documented evidence clearly illustrates a long history of detrimental environmental and economic impacts where horse slaughterhouses once operated.

Resounding evidence of unspeakable cruelties, egregious violations and a lack of enforcement by the USDA in U.S. slaughterhouses led Congress to the defunding of USDA inspections in 2007. That protective language was later quietly stripped from the annual appropriations bill in Nov 2011 by the powerful pro-slaughter lobby which is working at lightning speed to reopen horse slaughter plants in the U.S. If action is not taken, the torturous agony caused to U.S. horses once they are designated as food animals will continue to escalate – a potentially devastating situation for America’s horses and to people on a global level.

"Each day countless horses and burros are lost to barbaric and needless killing that can be prevented; this killing additionally places human lives at risk, contributes to toxic waste and it is my goal to help see that this becomes a thing of the past. This is the path that Wild For Life Foundation has always been on and I am proud to be on this path together with WFLF and the many like minded individuals and companies that support it," - Katia Louise. "Timing is pivotal, with the BLM's escalated agression toward the elimination of our wild horses and burros from the rangelands through roundups, removal and experimental sterilization, and the escalated number of wild and domestic equines slipping away to cruel and barbaric slaughter."
